Why use it
PDF and Word aware
Extracts text from PDF and DOCX files in your browser, so you can diff documents, not just pasted snippets.
Line and word diff
Side-by-side lines with changed words highlighted, or one inline flow that ignores where lines break.
Private by design
Files are read and compared locally. Nothing is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.
Great for
- Spotting what changed between two versions of a contract or report
- Checking a PDF export against the original document
- Comparing configs, JSON or CSV exports and copy-edited text
How to use
- Paste text into the Original and Changed boxes, or upload a PDF, DOCX or text file on each side.
- Pick Lines for a side-by-side view, or Words for an inline view that suits PDFs and prose.
- Turn on Ignore case, Ignore whitespace or Ignore blank lines to skip differences you do not care about.
- Read the highlighted changes and the similarity score, then copy the diff or swap the sides.
Questions
Can I compare two PDF files?
Yes. Upload a PDF on each side and the tool extracts the text layer in your browser and compares it. Layout, fonts and images are not compared — only the text.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Not directly. A scanned PDF is a picture of text with no text layer, so there is nothing to extract. Run it through OCR first, then upload the result.
Which file types are supported?
PDF, DOCX and plain-text formats such as TXT, MD, CSV, TSV, JSON, XML, HTML, YAML and source code. Files can be up to 20 MB.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Reading and comparing happen entirely in your browser, so contracts and drafts never leave your device.
What is the difference between Lines and Words mode?
Lines mode aligns the two texts line by line and highlights the changed words inside each modified line. Words mode compares word by word in a single flow, which avoids false differences when line breaks fall in different places, as they often do in PDFs.
Why does my PDF comparison show many differences?
PDFs store text in positioned fragments, so line breaks and page breaks rarely match between two versions. Switch to Words mode and enable Ignore case or whitespace options to focus on real edits.
What does the similarity percentage mean?
It is twice the number of unchanged lines (or words) divided by the total in both texts. 100% means identical, and lower values mean more edits.
Is there a size limit for pasted text?
No fixed limit, but very large or heavily different texts are compared approximately: unmatched sections are shown as one replaced block instead of line-by-line matches.
