How it works

The cutout is produced by U²-Net, a salient-object-detection model that runs inside your browser through WebAssembly. The model and the runtime are downloaded once and cached; your photo is only ever read by the page you are looking at, and is never sent to a server.

Questions
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The model itself is downloaded to your browser and the whole cutout runs on your device — your photo never leaves it and there is no server to send it to.
Why is the first run slow?
The first time you use the tool your browser downloads about 18 MB — the AI model plus the runtime that executes it. It is cached afterwards, so every later image is fast.
What kind of images work best?
One clear subject against a background it contrasts with: people, products, pets, objects on a desk. Busy scenes with no obvious subject are where it struggles.
Why are the edges soft around hair or fur?
It predicts the cutout at 320×320 and scales that up, so very fine detail gets smoothed. It is a fast, private approximation rather than a hand-made clipping path.
